Sad end of Policarpo Quaresma

Iracema
Dating back to 1865, the novel is an icon of Indianism and one of the best known creations of our literature. The work brings the love story between the Indian Iracema and the adventurer Martim, attributing to him the character of a founding legend of the national character. In it, as is recurrent in romantic nationalism, the author chooses tropical nature, the pre-colonial past and the process of miscegenation involving the Indian and the Portuguese colonizer as formative elements_cc781905-5cde-3194-bb3b -136bad5cf58d_do the spirit of the Brazilian people. Luciola
The work, published in 1862, was the first in the series “profiles of women”, which also includes the novelsDiva, from 1864, andMadam, from 1875. The three are presented by the fictional lady GM, author or hypothetical editor of the narratives, which deal with romantic heroines transformed by the power of love, with the stories located in the city of Rio de Janeiro, in the time of the Second Reign. Lucíola is narrated in the first person, from the perspective of the character Paulo, the protagonist's lover, who reports, in letters sent to GM, the setbacks of his relationship with the famous courtesan, which occurred years before the narrated facts were written. The work, which, like the others in the series, follows the formula of the French serial, maintains correspondence with the renownedThe Lady of the Camellias(1848), a novel by Alexandre Dumas (son), which became a great success with the public in different parts of the world, including Brazil.

The Silver Mines
Fully published in six volumes between 1865 and 1866, this novel evokes the early days of colonial Brazil. EmThe Silver Mines, as can also be seen in The Guarani and at Iracema, Alencar makes use of the resources typical of the adventure novel, incorporating elements of the myth of origin into the narrative, this time to represent the demand for precious metals in colonial Brazil, thus searching for "Potosi" Brazilian ou the tropical "Eldorado". This is the motto chosen by Alencar to insert our colonial history, in the order of ideals supranationals in vogue in the Romantic period. The historical novel, modality in which the work is situated, was consolidated in the beginning of the 19th century, its origin being linked to the development of historiography as a discipline, and had as one of its most prominent representatives, the Scottish writer Walter Scott, read and much appreciated by Alencar. The common thread of the novel is the search for a route to the silver mines, supposedly discovered by the adventurer Robério Dias, an episode to which the author refers inThe Guarani🇧🇷 Here you find para download the complete novel in a 2014 edition, published by Iba Mendes.

the Sertanejo
Published in 1875, the same year as the release of the urban novelMadam🇧🇷the sertanejofalls within the “sertanista” strand, contemporary called regionalism. This current gained strength in Brazil in the 1870s, when positivist criticism, then on the rise, already questioned the prominence of the Indian as an element that formed the national character, and the Indianist motto, glossed by our first romantics to demarcate, was exhausted. the origin and the historical particularities of the Brazilian nation. Appearing about five years after the publication of Alencar's first sertanista novel (The Gaucho, 1870) and three years afterInnocence(1872), by the Viscount of Taunay, the work introduces the city reader of the time to the rustic life in the Cariris of Ceará. Unlike Taunay, Alencar endows the sertanejo with positive features, presenting the caboclo, the result of miscegenation between the Portuguese colono and the Indian, as a symbol of strength, courage, sense of freedom, insight and purity of character. In this novel, in which seriousness is tempered with a discreet dose of humour, the tragic spirit gives way to drama, keeping the fate of Arnaldo, the enigmatic countryman, and of the sacred and unlikely love that is born between him and Flor, the virginal daughter of the powerful captain-major.

A FRAMEWORK OF ROMANTIC REGIONALISM

Innocence
The work was authored by Alfredo MA d'Escragnolle Taunay, the Viscount of Taunay, who worked as a military engineer in the interior of Mato Grosso, in the battle known as the “Retirada da Laguna” (1867), which took place during the war from Paraguay. This campaign would have inspired the author's regionalist verve. The romanceInnocence(1872) is seen as a reference of literary sertanismo, whose main representatives, in addition to Taunay and Alencar, were Franklin Távora (the hair, 1876;The Matuto, 1878) and Bernardo Guimarães (The Hermit of Muquem, 1858;The Prospector, 1872), the latter considered the forerunner of this trend in Brazilian literature. Unlike what is observed in Alencar, in Taunay's novel, the sertanejo represents the face of backward Brazil, where rustic life translates into the rigid and coarse customs of the common rural man, which, in conflict with the urbanity of the Brazilian educated at court. Set in the backlands of Mato Grosso, in 1860, the plot tells the story of a tragic love involving the ill-fated Cirino, a young provincial with courteous habits and appearance, who passes for a doctor, and Inocência, the sweet and naive daughter of a local farmer, promised in marriage to the rude Manecão, a cattle trader, with an intransigent character and violent habits. The nationalist bias is configured, not exactly by the exaltation of the particularities of the Brazilian refractory to foreign influences, nor only by the meticulous record of the rich diversity of the fauna and flora still almost untouched in the interior, but, above all, by the effort to integrate to the official Brazil the farthest corners of the national territory, little affected by external influences, with their peculiar customs and modes of sociability.

EXPONENTS OF REGIONALISM
PRE-MODERNIST

EUCLIDES DA CUNHA, SIMÕES LOPES NETO E MONTEIRO LOBATO
In the context of Brazilian literary history, the term Pre-Modernism has two distinct meanings, being used now0 being used now0 136bad5cf58d_from the point of view chronological, to name a moment immediately prior to Modernism; now from the point of view estético, referring to a set of works that anticipate or foreshadow the thematic and formal renovations carried out, programmatically, by the modernists. In the first sense, the term brings together an eclectic production, to evoke here the expression used by Alceu Amoroso Lima, the first to use it to designate the literature that emerged in Brazil between 1900 and 1920, which comprises obras_cc781905 -5cde-3194-bb3b-136bad5cf58d_symbolists, naturalists, realists and Parnassians, as well as publications that would anticipate the aesthetic revolution of the following years. This includes authors as distinguished as Amadeu Amaral, Coelho Neto, Hermes Fontes, Augusto dos Anjos, Graça Aranha, Lima Barreto, among others. In the second sense, critics, like Alfredo Bosi, highlight, in particular, writers with a realist tendency, in whose works a critical approach to the national reality is configured, among these, those that are located in the regionalist aspect. In the following section, we provide, fordownload, three examples of pre-modernist regionalism, which allow us to reflect on the aesthetic diversity characteristic of this literary period. They are: The Sertões(1902), by Euclides da Cunha; Gaucho Tales(1912), by Simões Lopes Neto; eUrupese(1918), by Monteiro Lobato.
The Sertões
A kind of literary essay or romanticized reportage, this classic by Euclides da Cunha, published in 1902, has as its main subject the Canudos Campaign (1896-1897), in especial, o conflito sangrento ocorrido naquele povoado, envolvendo o místico sebastianista Antônio Conselheiro, fiel à monarquia, então, recentemente, extinta,_cc781905- 5cde-3194-bb3b-136bad5cf58d_ and the republican military forces.
Gaucho Tales
This book of short stories (1912), by Simões Lopes Neto, has as its narrator the tropeiro and story teller Blau Nunes, who, at eighty-eight years old and with “all teeth”, narrates, in "Gausca" dialect, stories, witnessed by him, to a literate man, a kind ofalter egoby the author, passing through the gaucho pampas. The cases remembered by old Blau relate to the anecdote involving anonymous drovers and ranchers, having, as a historical background, the bloody conflicts that occurred in the Province of São Pedro do Rio Grande do Sul, in the 19th century, namely: the Cisplatine wars ( 1825-1828), the Farrapos (1835-1845) and Paraguay (1864-1870).
Urupese
Urupese (1918), by Monteiro Lobato, is composed of 14 texts, which, in large part, deal with the daily life of the caboclo in the interior of São Paulo, reporting the their beliefs, customs and traditions. In this book, the eponymous article, “Urupês”, stands out, which contains an unveiled critique of a certain romantic version of the caipira and makes, for the first time, reference to the ridiculous character of Jeca-Tatu.
